Waterford vs. Baker, 1829-1841.

Suit brought in U. S. Court for the Seventh Circuit and District of Eastern Tennessee, Knoxville, against Isaac Baker. Major issues included disputed tracts of land in Tazewell Co., Va. and Sullivan Co., Tennessee, the sale of forty head of cattle, and the ownership of a slave named Walter Waterford, Adam Waterford's brother. The respondent died in 1830 and the plaintiff died c. 1835. The heirs, David Waterford and his siblings and John Baker, reopened the case in 1835. The case was resolved in the plaintiff's favor.

Adam Waterford, "a freeman of colour," had been born a slave during the last quarter of the 18th century but emancipated sometime prior to March 1817 when he was granted permission by the Tazewell County (Va.) Court to settle in that county. By April 1817, he was residing in Sullivan County, Tenn., where he had purchased 206 acres of land.
